MMT Niramit was established May 2008 as a regional peer-based support network for experts, practitioners and managers involved in Opioid Substitution Treatment and/or Methadone Maintenance Treatment (OST/MMT) in Asia.

MMT Niramit was established May 2008 as a regional peer-based support network for experts, practitioners and managers involved in Opioid Substitution Treatment and/or Methadone Maintenance Treatment (OST/MMT) in Asia.

MMT Niramit is committed to establishing and maintaining a resource base for ongoing technical and professional exchange including an MMT Niramit website and Email network. The website will capture key reference materials on policy, research, guidelines, training curricula and OST/MMT programs and practice. In the initial phase the IDI OST project will resource translation of key materials from China over the next 6 months to assist access and exchange across this language divide. The E-network includes email list serves to enable rapid communication and direct links between peers. MMT Niramit supports ongoing bi-lateral and inter-regional site visits to enhance program learning and professional exchange. A visit to Yunnan Province, China is tentatively scheduled for late 2008 with representatives from Cambodia and Thailand participating.

MMT Niramit will continue to identify linkages with regional and international conferences (e.g. ICAAP, IHRA, and the Annual Thai National Conference on Substance Abuse) where satellite meetings may be cost-effectively arranged to maintain face-to-face contact for this peer group.  It is agreed that all future meetings should include a site visit to view practice in the local clinical and public health context.

A range of national multi-sectoral committees and working groups are emerging to support MMT leaders in their program development and expansion. MMT Niramit was established to systematically provide an additional level of support for international and regional peer exchange for the "Dr. Methadone" in each country. It is viewed as a valuable resource by the key players in implementation of MMT programs.
